History and Development

The DeviousMUD, forerunner to RuneScape, was created in 1998 by Andrew Gower. The game, which was never available to the public, used isometric graphics. Gower then completely rewrote the game in 1999, but without improvements in graphics. This version was released to the public as a beta version, for just one week before being removed.
Gower, a student at Cambridge University, worked with his brother, Paul Gower, to rewrite the game. The isometric graphics were replaced by a blend of 2D and 3D images. The game, renamed RuneScape, was released as a beta to the public on January 4, 2001 whose server was in his parents' house in Nottingham. In December 2001, the Gower brothers and Constant Tedder got together to form the Jagex Ltd.. to keep the commercial aspects of running RuneScape. Jagex has developed a domain-specific language, called RuneScript, which is used by RuneScape servers to control events. On February 29, 2002, a monthly option was introduced, allowing access to new areas, new adventures and new items.
RuneScape's popularity can be attributed partly to be accessible to most internet browsers, allowing players to access the game from multiple locations. As RuneScape gained more users, Jagex began planning major changes. The developers completely rewrote the game to make it completely three dimensional, giving it the name of RuneScape 2. A beta version was released to users subscribers on 1 December 2003 and the final version was released to the public on March 17, 2004. Upon release, RuneScape 2 was renamed RuneScape, and the original game is now called RuneScape Classic. On 12 January 2006, Jagex removed over 5000 RuneScape Classic accounts due to cheating, and finished the registration of new accounts. Subscribers Only users who had played RuneScape Classic at least once since 3 August, 2005, and who had played once every six months would have access to both worlds remnants of the classic version of the game.
To fund the free content of RuneScape, advertising banners were installed above the window of the game in free servers. On 13 July 2006, Jagex signed an exclusive contract with WildTangent Games, which provided in-game advertising and the United States of America. The contract also allowed WildTanget distribute the game through the WildTangent Games Network, a distribution channel for games that included more than 20 million users. Jagex Moderators reported that in-game advertisements are no longer used. Since some computers have devices that block banners, which may discourage advertisers, Jagex introduced a rule that prohibits the user to block the banners.
On May 16, 2006, RuneScape has improved the system, mainly to allow a reduction of the requirements of the game, allowing expansions and improvements without increasing the load time of the game. The system was again improved on 26 June 2007 to allow addition of future content. On 1 July 2008, Jagex released a beta version of its way "HD" for subscribed users, and the free version was released two weeks later. Before the launch, Jagex had already noticed that it would launch the HD mode at E3 2008. At the same time, announced that the subscription price would rise on August 4, 2008, increasing the price by $ 0.95 / £ 0.30 bringing the monthly price to $ 5.95 / £ 3.50. Currently, existing users whose signature is not interrupted for more than two weeks still pay the price of 2002.
Vince Farquahrson was announced as the new "Director of RuneScape" on 21 October 2008. His first action was to declare 2009 as the "official year of improvements," which would focus on improvements of the details of the content already released, and includes new content.
In February 2009, a new CEO was announced, Mark Gerhard. In his first announcement to the community, announced extensive changes in how the company would manage the game. He promised to remove the vision Jagex as a "company secret and closed" and said it will increase communication with fansites, with players and focus more on creating free content. Two immediate examples of its new policy were the removal of commercial videos that were shown before the game starts, and a series of questions and answers with the players.
